Department of Foreign Languages for Professional Purposes at the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation was established in 2006, the head of which was Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor K. B. Zaitseva. Since 2016 the department has been headed by Doctor of Philology, professor Vera Yaroslavovna Mizetska.
A complex theme "Actual problems of teaching professional disciplines in higher education", which the department works on, provides teaching of such academic disciplines as English, Foreign Language of Specialty (English), the Latin language, Theory and Practice of Translation, Ukrainian for foreigners, Practice of Translation, Methodology of Linguistic Research, The Fundamentals of Linguistics, The Fundamentals of Translation Studies, Comparative Typology of the foreign language and the Ukrainian language at the Institute of Law, Economics and International Relations; at Odessa Medical Institute; at the Faculties of Linguistics and Translation, Art and Design, as well as in the Economic and Law College and Medical College.
Currently, the department academic staff convenes: 12 lecturers and 1 laboratory assistant. The department is represented by 2 Doctors of Philology: Vera Ya. Mizetska, Natalia V. Bardina, 3 Candidates of Philology and Pedagogy, Associate Professors - Inna V. Maletska, Nina P. Mikhayliuk, Oksana V. Starostina, 3 Senior lecturers: Olena V. Berezinska, Victoria V. Gromovenko, Inna N. Kovalenko and 4 lecturers - Lyudmila I. Alekseeva, Alla O. Varlamova, Tatiana V. Sinyova, Julia V. Sharapanovska. The laboratory assistant of the department Zlata S. Shchavinska is engaged in office work of the department.
Professor V.Ya. Mizetska gives lectures on "The Fundamentals of Linguistics", "The Fundamentals of Translation", "Comparative Typology of Languages". She is the author of about 130 scientific publications - 4 monographs, numerous articles, methodical guides. She is also a co-author of the collective scientific monograph "Concepts and contrasts".
The textbook "Practical Course of English for Law students" is widely used not only at the International Humanitarian University, but also at Odessa National University named after I.I. Mechnikov, Odessa Institute of Internal Affairs and other Universities, where the course of English is taken by law students.
Under her guidance 10 postgraduates defended Ph.D. theses, now they work in various higher educational institutions of Ukraine and abroad.
Professor V. Ya. Mizetska performs the duties of the Deputy Head of the State Examination Commission at the International Humanitarian University, she is often invited as the Head of the SEC at the other Universities of Odessa (South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushinsky, etc.). V.Ya. Mizetska is the main specialist of the expert commission on specialty 10.02.04 - German languages of the dissertational defence council K. 41.136.02, functioning at the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation of the International Humanitarian University.
Professor V. Ya. Mizetska is the Honorary Worker of Education of Ukraine. In 2017 she was awarded the memorable decoration "For the achievements in science" by the Head of Odessa region Rectors Council.
Professor N. V. Bardina, author of 150 scientific works, including two monographs, member of the dissertation defence council K 41.136.02 of the International Humanitarian University, regularly performs the duties of an expert and opponent of candidate theses in specialty 10.02.15; member of the editorial board of “Scientific Herald of the International Humanitarian University (series "Philology")”, scientific-theoretical journal on linguistics "Language". Under her guidance, the staff of the department annually holds sessions of scientific and practical round tables and conferences, particularly in June 2017 a scientific and practical conference "Actual problems of intercultural communication" was held.
Associate Professor I. V. Maletska is the author of more than 40 publications, among which is the methodological manual "Formation of artistic and creative skills of future teachers-philologists in the process of professional training". In 2017, she completed a scientific internship in the direction "Professional English for Lawyers" at West Finland College in Huittinen (Finland). In 2017 the Rectors Council of Odessa region awarded her an honorary diploma "For the significant contribution to the development of the national education and science, long-term conscientious work, productive scientific and pedagogical activity, high professionalism and on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the International Humanitarian University".
Associate Professor N. P. Mikhayliuk was trained under the Cambridge CELTA Course program (York, UK) and received the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) certificate in 2011.
Since September 2013, by order of the Ministry of Education and Science N. P. Mikhayliuk is the scientific secretary of the Dissertation Defence Council K 41.136.02 of the International Humanitarian University for PhD in specialties 10.02.04 - Germanic languages; 10.02.17 - comparative historical and typological linguistics; 10.02.15 - general linguistics. She regularly performs the duties of an expert and an opponent of Ph.D. theses in specialty 10.02.04.
In 2017 she co-authored the collective scientific monograph "Concepts and contrasts" edited by Professor N.V. Petlyuchenko, issued in honor of the 20th anniversary of the National University “Odessa Law Academy”.
Associate Professor O.V. Starostina is the author of the monograph "Professional skills in the system of professional development of teachers in England and Ukraine."
In 2017, she took a refresher course abroad at University of Danubius (Sladkowichevo, Slovak Republic).
Senior lecturer A. V. Berezinska is a postgraduate of the Department of Arts and General Humanitarian disciplines in specialty 034 "Culturology". Her scientific supervisor professor A. P. Ovchinnikova. In 2017 lecturers of the department I.V. Maletska and O. V. Berezinska published a textbook "Communicative-oriented course of Ukrainian as a foreign language for students- dentists".
The senior lecturer V. V. Gromovenko, a postgraduate of the Department of German and Oriental Languages of the International Humanitarian University, is engaged in the study of political discourse under the guidance of Professor I.V. Stupak.
In 2016 lecturers of the department T.V. Sineva and L.I. Alekseeva issued  "Training Workshop on a foreign (English) language of professional communication" in two parts.
Senior lecturer I. N. Kovalenko is a co-author of the textbook "Science and art of manager’s authority".
Lecturers of the department carry out investigations in such areas as philology, pedagogy, psychology, theory and methodology of professional education, methods of teaching foreign languages, sociolinguistics, culturology. The realization forms of scientific projects are dissertations, publication of scientific articles and monographs, participation in scientific conferences, round tables devoted to various subjects and directions. As a result of this work, the department created a scientific and methodological base, issued numerous tutorials and recommendations. The staff of the department constantly demonstrate qualification by publishing the scientific articles in the journals included in the list of scientific specialized editions of Ukraine and the international science-metric database Index Copernicus International (Republic of Poland): "Scientific Herald of International Humanitarian University", "Odessa Linguistic Herald", "Actual directions of modern philology", etc.
Also, the lecturers of the department regularly participate in international scientific and scientific and practical conferences both in Ukraine and abroad.
In 2014 - 2015 the department held the I and II International scientific conferences "Actual problems of research and teaching of professional disciplines in higher education". Due to the well-coordinated work of the organizing committee, lecturers and students of the Department of Foreign Languages of Professional Purposes, the conferences were held at a high organizational and scientific level, and its results became the impetus for further scientific research and debates on the methodology of teaching a foreign language.
The department staff regularly visits methodological seminars, takes part in webinars held by the British Council, Cambridge Assessment English, International Language Centre, Cambridge University Press.
The department annually prepares students for participation in university conferences and olympiads, organizes meetings with native speakers.
For conscientious fulfillment of professional duties, active participation in the life of the working team and on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the International Humanitarian University, the department members Professor V.Ya. Mizetska; Associate Professors I.V. Maletska, O.V. Starostina; senior lecturers O. V. Berezinska; V.V. Gromovenko and lecturer Ju. V. Sharapanovska were awarded honorary decorations, certificates and valuable gifts.
