Department of German and Oriental Languages

The Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages was founded on June 14, 2012 by Order No. 178a “On the Foundation of the Department of Germanic and Oriental languages of the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation”. The department was headed by Grand PhD in Philological Sciences, Professor Inna Stupak from 2012 to 2016. Elina Larina, PhD in Philological Sciences, Associate Professor has been the head of the department since 2016.
Compared to other departments of the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation, the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages is rather young. The high level of faculty training (among them graduates of leading European universities, specialists in various fields of philology (comparative and historical linguistics, linguistic typology, general linguistics, Germanic languages, languages of people of Asia, Africa, aborigines of America and Australia), who have undergone training in Germany, Austria, China), allows to say that the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages takes a worthy place among the team members of the International Humanitarian University.
Today the teaching staff of the department is Grand PhD in Philological Sciences, Professor Inna Stupak; Doctors of Philosophy in Philological Sciences, Associate Professors are Elina Larina, Volodymyr Ryzhykh, Ihor Peresada; Ph.D. in Public Administration Tetyana Filipova; Ph.D. in Law Chang Bin Lin;     lecturers – Yuliya Koltsova, Oleksandra Korenkova, Anastasiya Byelyayeva,
Hanna Adamova, Olha Dalte,  Viktoriya Hrytsenko, Shao Yalin, Daniil Danilets.
The department is specialized in German, Chinese and Arabic languages.
The department provides teaching of the following subjects: Practical Course in the First Foreign Language (German, Chinese), Practical Course in the Second Foreign Language (German), Practical Course in the Third Foreign Language (Arabic), Translation and Interpreting (the first and second foreign languages), Language Learning through Study of a Country`s Customs and Institutions, Comparative Typology of German and Ukrainian, A History of the German Language, German Language and Literature, Oriental Literature, Theoretical Grammar of Oriental Languages, special courses, translation workshops (international law, tourism, technical translation, translation of literary style).
Educational and methodological complexes developed by the department include a socio-cultural component that allows studying the mentality of the native speakers, which nowadays is the main requirement for the training of highly skilled specialists in linguistics, including the participation of foreign colleagues from other Ukrainian and foreign universities.
Thus, at the Department’s of Germanic and Oriental Languages invitation Professor Torsten Leuschner, vice-president of the Belgian Association of Specialists in Germanic Studies and German Teachers (the Faculty of German Philology, Ghent University (Belgium)) and Professor Rostyslav Yevgenovych Pylypenko (president of the Association of Specialists in Germanic Studies of the Ukrainian Higher School) visited the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation on April 13, 2017. Professor Loischner delivered a lecture on "Germanisms in European Languages". The lecture has been integrated into the courses on the Comparative Typology of German and Ukrainian Languages ​​and a History of German Language that are given at the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages.
The priority scientific areas of the department are typological and comparative linguistics and the diachronic approach as to the study of different languages. The postgraduate studies are supervised by leading experts: Professors I.V. Stupak, V.H. Taranets, and Associate Professor V.I. Ryzhykh.
The Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages ​​held the International Theoretical and Practical Conference “Topical Issues of Modern Philology” on April 27, 2017. The conference was dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the International Humanitarian University (founded on August 20, 2002) within the national programme "Education" based on the principles of the Concept of Liberal Education development in Ukraine and the requirements of current legislation.
We are constantly aiming at expanding the faculty's possibilities to train specialists in other foreign languages, to carry out research with the representatives of other foreign higher educational institutions. Therefore, we were very glad that our conference had attracted 42 scientists and lecturers from different regions of Ukraine (Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Cherkasy) and various countries all over the world (The USA, Hungary, China, Austria, Brazil). Among the participants were 9 Grand Doctors of Philosophy in Philological Sciences, Professor, 16 Doctors of Philosophy in Philological Sciences, Associate Professors. It was pleasant that 12 post-graduate students and students decided to discuss their first scientific achievements at the conference. We hope that this conference will be a significant contribution to the development of the Ukrainian philology in particular and outline the ways to solve the problems of training specialists in the corresponding field.
The Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages ​​carries out the language training of highly skilled, competitive specialists in philology and translation. The department has a speaking club with German native speakers, German language courses for different levels of the language training (from A1 to C1 for passing exams and getting ÖSD, TestDaF diplomas (training, field-work and employment, including scientists).
German is chosen as a second foreign language in most Ukrainian schools after English, and 52% of schoolchildren express their desire for learning it. German proficiency is also studying in German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), and participating in programmes for professional training and employment. For scholars, it’s more likely to get grants for their research. Many students go on studying in Germany, because it’s free for foreigners, and after graduating from the university they have golden opportunities.
The 2017/2018 academic year is declared to be the year of learning German in Ukraine. Therefore, the Department of Germanic and Oriental languages ​​is always involved in numerous activities aimed at popularizing it, i.e. weeks of German language, competitions, presentations, linguistic studies, quizzes, workshops, and literary soirees. It was an amazing experience to have a poetry evening with the actors of the theater “Tour de Force”. The soiree was dedicated to the great Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Our students recited verses in the original, and the actors declaimed in translations by B. Pasternak, V. Stus, M. Bazhan, M. Orest, E. Witkowski, I. Andrushenko, M. M. Moskalenko.
The department held a phonetic contest in April 2017, students of the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation learning the German language competed in three categories:  “News Presentation” (voting in social networks), “Liguria is the longest tongue twister in the world” and “German tongue twisters”. Linguists and speech therapists recommend using the tongue twisters to train the pronunciation of various phonemes. Due to tongue twisters, our students-linguists adapt their vocal apparatus to the features of the German language, learn to pronounce sounds in compound phrases and train articulation correctly. The winners received prizes from the Goethe-Institute and the German publishing houses Cornelsen and Hueber.
For senior pupils of Odessa the department holds the school for a young translator for the second consecutive year in June. Students, our future entrants, get acquainted with the basics of the profession of translator, which has long been prestigious and in demand. The teachers of the department develop their professional qualities: phonemic hearing, semantic and logical memory, analytical skills, flair for language, and constant attention.
The department maintains contacts with the DAAD and the Goethe-Institute in Ukraine. The head of the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages, Associate Professor E.V. Larina took part in the First All-Ukrainian Forum of Teachers of the German Language “Professional Spheres of the German Language – German at School and Institution of Higher Education in Ukraine today", which was held on November 25-26, 2016, at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. The organizers of the forum are the Goethe-Institute in Ukraine, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA), the Association of Ukrainian Specialists in Germanic Studies, the Association of Specialists in Germanic Studies of the Ukrainian Higher School and the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”.
Associate Professor Ihor Valeriyovych Peresada participated in the workshop for teachers of the German language “Austrian Days in Chisinau”, organized by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education. The program of the seminar involved various aspects of teaching and learning German, i.e. the features of Austrian German, computer programs for the teaching of the German language, country study workshop on “Vienna is the capital of Austria”.
Our students go on studying in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and China. So, our student Anastasiya Apalyayeva was trained in Germany, Nuremberg, Bavaria on the exchange programme “Experten-Praktika Ukraine-Moldau in Nordbayern” in 2015. The training programme was organized by the public organization Dekabristen e.V. with the assistance of the German Ministry of Finance.
The Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages ​​actively co-operates with the Confucius Institute in Odessa. Volunteers (native speakers of the language) work at the department. Our Chinese colleagues are constantly informing students about grant programs for studying in China, about the summer and winter language camps of leading universities in Beijing and Harbin. It should be said that all the expenses for stay (accommodation, food, excursion programme) in the country is assumed by the Chinese side.
The Confucius Institute holds an international competition “The Bridge of Chinese Language”, and then the winner represents Ukraine in the finale in Beijing; more than 50 countries all over the world take part in the competition. Our Chinese colleagues emphasize the high level of our students’ proficiency in the Chinese language. Elizaveta Ruban, who won the 1st place in the semifinal and the 2nd in the final of the competition, received a scholarship to study in China. Our student, Diana Shemet, became the winner of 2016 again.  Diana also demonstrated her skill in playing the old Chinese musical instrument pipa.

Elina Larina,

    Elina Larina has PhD in Philological Sciences (specialty 10.02.15 – General Linguistics), Associate Professor, member of the Specialized Academic Council K 41.136.02, graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy (The department of Germanic Studies) at the Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany). Specialty: Language and Literature. Qualification: Teacher of Foreign Languages ​​(German, English).
Elina Larina underwent training at the Academy of Intercultural Communication in Bayreuth, Germany, 2000 (3. Akademie-Monat für Hochschullehrer germanistischer Fächer und Deutschlandstudien), at the University of Bonn, Germany, 2009 (FE 2.1 Fortbildung im Erwachsenenbereich Aus und und Fortbildungsdidaktik), participated in the International Linguistic Colloquium (the 41st Linguistic Colloquium "Die Ordnung des Standart und die Differenzierung der Diskurse" (Germany, Mannheim, 2006), the 42nd Linguistic Colloquium "Sprachenvielfalt und Sprachenlernen: Neue Wege zur Literalität" (Greece), Rhodes, 2007), the 43rd Linguistic Colloquium "Pragmantax II. Zum aktuellen Stand der Linguistik und ihrer Teildisziplinen" (Germany, Magdeburg, 2008), the 44th Linguistic Colloquium "Globalisierung-Interkulturelle Kommunikation-Sprache" (Bulgaria, Sofia, 2009), the 50th Linguistic Colloquium "Sprache verstehen, verwenden, übersetzen" (Austria, Innsbruck, 2015), took part in international conferences of teachers of the German language (2005 – Graz, Austria, 2009 – Jena / Weimar, Germany). She regularly participates in workshops of the Goethe-Institute in Ukraine.

She was awarded the Honorary Award “Sign of Honor” of the International Humanitarian University (2016).

Inna Stupak,
Dean of the Faculty of Linguistics and Translation

Inna Stupak has Grand PhD in Philological Sciences (specialty 10.02.17 – Comparative-historical and Typological Linguistics) Professor, Head of the Specialized Academic Council K 41.136.02.
Inna Stupak graduated from the Izmail State Pedagogical Institute (Specialty: Foreign Languages. Qualification: Teacher of Foreign Languages (German, English).
In 2011 she defended her doctoral thesis on “Derivative causative verbs in German and Ukrainian languages”.
Inna Stupak is also an editor-in-chief of the Scientific Herald of the International Humanitarian University. Series: Philology (included in the list of scientific professional publications of Ukraine and indexed in the international database INDEX COPERNICUS (Poland).
Inna Stupak was awarded the Honorary Award of the International Humanitarian University of the 3rd Degree for her high achievements in the organization of the teaching process, fruitful research and educational activity, a significant contribution to the development of the International Humanitarian University (October 24, 2014).

Volodymyr  Ryzhykh

Volodymyr Ryzhykh has PhD in Philological Sciences (specialty 10.02.13 – Languages of People of Asia, Africa, Aborigines of America and Australia), Associate Professor.
He graduated from the Military Institute of Foreign Languages of the Ministry of Defense (Specialty: Foreign Languages. Qualification: Officer with higher Military Education (Translator & Assistant of Arabic and English). V.I. Ryzhykh has government awards, such as a medal "For Combat Services" (Order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of 19 February 1988). Major Ryzhykh was also awarded a Libyan Order of the Great September of the Second Degree on June 28, 1992 for cooperation between peoples.
V. Ryzhykh is an author of many monographs and manuals on the Arabic language (“The Collection of Grammar Exercises and Tables on Arabic Grammar for First Year Students”, “The verbal system of the Arabic literary language (based on the Arabic didactic tradition),” “Selected Arabic stories (in the original),” “Learn to read and write in Arabic. Introductory phonetic and calligraphic Arabic course)”.

Ihor Peresada

Ihor Peresada has PhD in Philological Sciences (specialty 10.02.04 – Germanic Languages), Associate professor.
He graduated from the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology of Odessa National I.I. Mechnikov University (Specialty: German Language and Literature). Qualification: Philologist, Teacher of German, English and Literature.
I.Peresada regularly takes part in the workshops of the Goethe-Institute in Ukraine. He has an Austrian Language Diploma Certificate (Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch).
Ihor Peresada was trained at the National University “Odesa Law Academy” at the Department of Foreign Languages ​​(2016).

Chang Bin Lin is a lecturer at the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages, Ph.D. in Law (specialty: Theory and History of State and Law, the History of Political and Legal Studies). Chang Bin Lin graduated from the Odesa National I.I. Mechnikov University. Specialty: Jurisprudence. Qualification: Lawyer. 

Hanna Adamova is a lecturer at the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages.
She graduated from the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology of the Odessa National I.I. Mechnikov University (Specialty: Language and Literature (German). Qualification: Philologist, Teacher of German and English Languages ​​and Literature) and The National University “Odessa Law Academy” (with honors) in specialty: Jurisprudence. Qualification: Lawyer.
H. Adamova underwent training at the Odessa National I.I. Mechnikov University at the Department of Germanic languages in 2011 and at the National University “Odesa Law Academy” at the Department of Foreign Languages in 2016.

Anastasiya Byelyayeva is a lecturer at the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages.
She graduated from the Kyiv National Linguistic University (Specialty: Philology). Qualification: Teacher of Chinese, English and Foreign literature).
A. Byelyayeva underwent training at the Nanjing Teachers Training University (China) in 2013 and in Peking (2017).

                                                             Viktoriya Hrytsenko

Viktoriya Hrytsenko graduated summa cum laude from the Odessa National I.I. Mechnikov University in 2006, obtained a complete higher education (Specialty: the Ukrainian Language and Literature. Qualification: Philologist, Teacher of the Ukrainian language and literature, foreign literature and German).  Since September 2017, V. Hrytsenko has been a lecturer at the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages ​​at the International Humanitarian University. She teaches the practical course of the second foreign language.

Yuliya Koltsova is a lecturer at the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages. She graduated from the Odessa National I.I. Mechnikov University (Specialty: German Language and Literature). Qualification: Philogist, Teacher of German, English and Literature and from the National University “Odesa Law Academy” in specialty: Jurisprudence. Qualification: Lawyer.

Oleksandra Korenkova

Oleksandra Andriyivna Korenkova is a lecturer at the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages. She graduated from the International Humanitarian University (Specialty: Translation. Qualification: Philologist, Translator, Teacher of English and German Languages and Literature.
O.A. Korenkova is a post-graduate student at the International Humanitarian University (specialty 10.02.17 – Comparative-historical and Typological Linguistics).

Shao Yalin graduated from the Bishkek Humanities University named after K. Karasaev with honors, the Kyrgyz Republic (Specialty: Linguistics. Qualification: Master of Linguistics). She has been teaching Chinese at the International Humanitarian University since 2015.

Daniil Danilets is a post-graduate student at the Department of Germanic and Oriental Languages. He graduated from the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology of the Odessa National I.I. Mechnikov University (Specialty: German Language and Literature) and the faculty of Economics and Law (Specialty: Management of Foreign Economic Activity).
Daniil  also graduated from the Institute of Germanistics at the University of Vienna, Austria (Institute fur Germanistik, Universitat Wien, Osterreich).
He is a postgraduate student at the International Humanitarian University (specialty 10.02.17 – Comparative-historical and Typological Linguistics) and works as a lecturer of the German Language (Cursos de Linguas, Aristoteles Institut fur Fremdsprachen, Brazil).
