Established in 2006 at the same time as the founding of the Faculty of Economics and Management, which later became part of the Institute of Law, Economics and International Relations, the Department of Management concentrated in its management specialties and became the founder of a number of other departments of the faculty, which were separated from it and become independent.

When creating the specialties of management profile at the faculty, they proceeded from the understanding that in Ukraine there were not enough qualified management personnel. Managers' preparedness to manage industries and enterprises in the face of significant changes in the country was very weak. At the same time, in the process of divestment, privatization, restructuring, and corporatization of enterprises, a number of fundamentally new tasks were posed to management personnel - both in terms of goals and methods of management, and in relation to responsibility to different social groups and society as a whole. The management of Ukrainian enterprises with all the desire to "work in a new way" was poorly adapted to successfully manage under new, market circumstances. What should a company do, which industries should be developed in the first place? What is the emphasis – on the immediate profit or the long-term growth strategy? What investments is it possible to get and how to organize this process? What product should be produced and how to promote it on the market? Ukrainian education has largely a theoretical focus, while in the West, business education is always focused on solving practical problems. In Soviet times, Ukraine has been taught mainly the knowledge that can be reproduced and obtained an academic assessment, while in the West it is taught the skills that can be practically applied and, if obtained, first of all for economic results. Another drawback of the then management in Ukraine was the lack of understanding of the importance of corporate culture. The company, firm, enterprise are a continuation of the human qualities of their executives and, at the same time, an environment for forming corporate values. Corporate culture is self-replicating and inheriting the managers of the next generations. Management in Ukrainian organizations has traditionally been reduced to the use of authoritarian management techniques, while they are ineffective in the long run.

The long-term strategy of the department is based on the fact that the training of managerial professions should be based primarily on a deep understanding of the economy and subordination to laws that shape a certain corporate culture. Manager is a specialist, who first of all understands – on a qualitative level – the economy and, on this basis, can make effective managerial decisions, forming a certain corporate culture – at the level of enterprise, industry, country.
The department trains specialists for the educational and professional levels of the bachelor's and master's degrees in two specialties – "Management" and "Public Management and Administration".

Both bachelor's and master's programs correspond to the prestigious courses of preparation in the west. There are no abstract graduation papers at the department – students prepare and defend master's works on real projects on enterprises orders, among them - the Department of Economic Development of the Odessa City Executive Committee. The department specializes in training specialists for work in customs bodies, first of all, at the Odessa customs.

Head of the Department - Tatiana Derkach, Doctor of Economics, Associate Professor

The teaching process at the department is provided by specialists of high qualification, namely: Doctor. econom. Sciences TV Derkach, Doctor of Economics. of sciences. , prof. Goncharuk AG, Doc. Economics, Assoc. OA Martinyuk, Ph.D. physical-mat. of sciences, prof. MP Kovalenko. Doctor is involved in working with students. econom. Professor, prof. OHM. Golovchenko, Doctor. econom. Sciences, prof. LM Potemkin. The middle generation is represented by Cand. econom. Sciences, Assoc. OV Zagoriy, Cand. econom. Sciences OF Zaporozhets, Cand. tech. Sciences, Assoc. NA Lebedev, Cand. econom. Minakova O.A. and other.

The educational curriculum of the department shows current trends in the development of economic science and management methods. In fact, after graduation, students are ready to work in organizations of diverse profiles due to knowledge gained in various fields of economics, management, finance, etc. Among the main disciplines of general direction are Micro- and Macroeconomics, Economic Theory, Theory of Organizations, Econometrics and Business Process Modeling, Management, Personnel Management, Financial Management, International Management, Developing Management Skills, Cross-Cultural Management, Economic Sociology and others. All specialties are taught in-depth English courses.

Each teacher finds his personal approach to the content and format of teaching, especially in the block of selective subjects. Teachers have to defend their choice at weekly scientific seminars of the department, not looking at the scientific degree and the rank of the opponents – only novelty, reasonableness of arguments, and timeliness play a role. The following examples demonstrate the authors' approach to their disciplines.

The program of training courses "Natural Resource Potential of the World" and "Regional Economy of the Modern World" (Ph.D. TV Derkach), in contrast to the typical ones, are in fact special courses, the author's feature of which is the systematic nature of the study of the three groups problems: common to all countries; characteristic of countries of a certain type (for example, oil-producing countries with the problem of their unprecedented wealth and archaic public relations; island countries with varying degrees of development; mountainous countries); individual. The specificity of the courses is also to provide future managers and economists with knowledge of the current state of one of the most significant and dynamic forms of organization of international economic relations - international regional cooperation. These courses contribute to the development of economic specialization of students of the specialties "Management" and "International Economic Relations", as well as the development of commercial strategy skills in participation in international regional associations.

The discipline "Customs Service of Foreign Economic Activity" (Ph.D. OF Zaporozhets) is taught on the basis of the Odessa customs, taking into account the experience of organizing tax and customs administration acquired by countries with similar economic, social, legal, cultural and humanitarian conditions to Ukraine development and similar trends in social transformation (CIS countries, Eastern Europe, China).

At the department, there is practically the only special seminar in Ukraine "Laboratory for the Development of Managerial Skills and Abilities" (Prof. N.P. Kovalenko). In this discipline, students not only study the science and art of management, but also, on a basis of many concrete situations (cases) and with a help of professional-oriented testing, recognize also their personal strengths and weaknesses – from the point of view of them as future managers. In such a way, by the time they graduate from university, each student will receive his own business "portrait", which is absolutely necessary when consciously choosing a place of work.

In the course "Marketing" (Assoc. Prof. NA Lebedev) the focus is on solving urgent marketing problems in existing enterprises, consideration of specific economic situations, business strategy games.
In the course "Innovation Management" (Assoc. Prof. OA Martyniuk) at seminars and practical classes students calculate different business models and evaluate the risk effectiveness of innovative projects, which is a non-trivial task for the most qualified specialists.

Despite the high level of unemployment in the country, after graduation, all graduates of the department find a job. This non-trivial fact is explained by two circumstances. First, graduates are well aware and understanding of the modern economy, although they are young, but already specialists, who are quite free to navigate the world of modern organizations and are able to bring this to the attention of employers. Second, having management as a management science gives them the edge in being able to consciously build careers: they are trained to solve problems analytically and creatively, gain power and influence, motivate people, manage conflicts and personal stress, build teams, negotiate and rationally and consistently defend their positions to achieve positive results.

Graduates of the department work as managers of enterprises of various forms of ownership, in tourist firms, Odessa customs, crewing companies, restaurants, cafes, fitness clubs, real estate agencies, etc.

For many years the department of management has been implementing a complex scientific theme "Development of methods of research of modernization processes in the economy of Ukraine and the world", in which teachers of the department and students are involved. The sections of this paper include topics: "Integration mechanisms in the system of regional governance" (Prof. TV Derkach); «Improvement of customs control procedures in the conditions of globalization» (Assoc. Prof. AF Zaporozhets); «Development of national economies and methods of management in the context of globalization in the context of cultural dimensions» (Prof. MP Kovalenko); “Designing the Development of Multimodal Transport Networks of Ukraine” (Assoc. Prof. NA Lebedev); “Innovation and Investment Strategy for Agribusiness Development of the South Ukrainian Region” (Prof. A. Martyniuk).

The department created the "Business Center for Business Environment Modeling for Basic Software" CS Odessa LLC "(scientific supervisor - Doctor of Economics, OA Martyniuk).

The results of scientific research are reflected in monographs, scientific articles in prestigious domestic and foreign journals, reports at scientific conferences. Among the monographs are: “Integration mechanisms in the system of regional governance: theory, methodology, practice” (Prof. TV Derkach. Mykolaiv, 2017, 450 p.); Behavior and Power in the Organization (Prof. MP Kovalenko. Odessa, Phoenix, 2003, 511 pp.); “Methodological bases of design of stage development of image and power of multimodal transport network” (Assoc. Prof. NA Lebedeva. Khabarovsk, “DVGUPS”, 2012, 227 p.). To help students, textbooks and teaching aids were published, including: “Science and Art of Managerial Power” (Prof. MP Kovalenko. Odessa, “Phoenix”, 2006, 510 pp.); “Management” (Prof. MP Kovalenko. Odessa, “Bukaev”, 2017, 361 pp.); “Management and Administrative Management” (Assoc. Prof. OA Martyniuk. Odessa, Helvetika, 2017, 540 pp.); "Marketing Research" (Assoc. Prof. NA Lebedev. Odessa, "Center for Operational Polygraphy", 2014, 52 p.); "Marketing" (Assoc. Prof. Lebedeva NA Odessa, "Center for Operational Polygraphy", 2015, 45 p.) And others.
